Sheridan’s trifle dessert in a glass bowl layered with sponge, custard, cream, and chocolate garnish

Prep Time: 25 mins (plus 2 hrs chilling)

Serves: 6-8

There’s nothing quite like a classic trifle to bring a touch of indulgence to the table — and with Sheridan’s Coffee Layered Liqueur in the mix, this dessert takes on a whole new level of sophistication. Our Sheridan’s Trifle layers coffee-soaked sponge, creamy custard, Sheridan’s whipped cream, and a drizzle of chocolate or cocoa for a dessert that’s as beautiful to serve as it is delicious to eat.

Whether you’re looking for a centerpiece at your next dinner party, a festive holiday treat, or simply a way to impress family and friends, this Sheridan’s Trifle recipe delivers elegance and indulgence in every spoonful.

Ingredients

  • 200ml Sheridan’s Coffee Layered Liqueur

  • 1 sponge cake or 8 sponge fingers (ladyfingers), broken into pieces

  • 300ml strong coffee, cooled

  • 500ml custard (homemade or store-bought)

  • 300ml double cream

  • 2 tbsp sugar (optional, for sweetening cream)

  • Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder, for garnish

  • Fresh berries (optional, for topping)

Method

  1. Place sponge pieces into the base of a large trifle dish.

  2. Pour the cooled coffee and 100ml of Sheridan’s evenly over the sponge, allowing it to soak through.

  3. Spread the custard evenly on top of the soaked sponge layer.

  4. Whip the cream with sugar (if using) until soft peaks form. Fold in 50ml Sheridan’s for added flavour.

  5. Spread the Sheridan’s whipped cream over the custard layer.

  6. Drizzle the remaining Sheridan’s lightly over the top and finish with chocolate shavings or cocoa powder.

  7. Chill for at least 1–2 hours before serving, to allow the flavours to meld.

Tips for Making the Perfect Sheridan’s Trifle

  • Make ahead: This dessert tastes even better when made the day before.

  • Add fruit: Fresh raspberries, cherries, or strawberries add a refreshing contrast to the rich cream and liqueur.

  • Presentation: Use a clear glass trifle bowl to show off the beautiful layers.

FAQs – Sheridan’s Trifle

Can I make Sheridan’s Trifle without coffee?

Yes — you can soak the sponge in hot chocolate, fruit juice, or even more Sheridan’s for a different twist.

Can I use instant custard?

Absolutely. While homemade custard gives a rich depth, instant custard is a quick and easy shortcut.

Can I make it alcohol-free?

You can omit the Sheridan’s and replace with coffee or a sweet syrup for a non-alcoholic trifle that still looks stunning.
